GoPro's Mission 1 Pro ILS Opens Its Ecosystem to Interchangeable Lenses

GoPro released the Mission 1 Pro ILS, its first camera with an interchangeable lens, giving the company's Micro Four Thirds mount access to lenses action cameras have never offered. It's available for pre-order now at $700, with retail availability following in September.
What's Different From the Standard Mission 1 Pro
The standard Mission 1 Pro ships with a fixed lens and a Type 1 (128mm²) sensor. The ILS uses the same sensor, but swaps the fixed lens for a Micro Four Thirds mount, opening the camera to third-party glass for the first time in GoPro's lineup.
The sensor's fast readout carries over unchanged: 4:3 open gate recording at up to 8K/30p, 4K up to 120p, or 60p and 240p in 16:9. It supports HLG for HDR straight out of camera, GP-Log2 for grading flexibility, and 32-bit float audio to avoid clipped sound.
The mount itself has no electronic contacts, so there's no autofocus, focus-by-wire, or electronic aperture control, meaning most Panasonic and OM System photo lenses won't function as intended on it. Focus is manual, assisted by focus peaking and magnification on the camera's 2.59-inch rear display.
A New App Built for Camera Operators
Alongside the ILS, GoPro launched Mission Monitor, an iPhone and iPad app that mirrors the camera's image to a larger screen and adds focus peaking, LUT view assist, and frameline overlays. It connects over USB rather than Wi-Fi, unlike GoPro's consumer-facing Quik app, which still works with this camera too.
The ILS is weatherproof rather than waterproof, a direct result of the open lens mount, and ships with a 50MP still photo mode alongside video.
Competitive Context
GoPro built its brand on rugged, fixed-lens, grab-and-go cameras. The Mission 1 Pro ILS moves in a different direction entirely, into a segment already occupied by Micro Four Thirds shooters from Panasonic and OM System, and closer in spirit to compact cinema cameras than to a traditional action cam. At $700 with no included lens, it's priced as an entry point into that world rather than a standalone purchase.
The Signal in the Noise
GoPro is betting there's real demand for a small, rugged body that accepts real lenses rather than living inside sealed housings. Pairing a monitoring app over USB with a manual-only lens mount signals this camera is meant to sit on a rig with an operator, not clipped to a helmet.
