PetaPixel's hands-on review calls the Media Mod Cage ($149.99) "an almost mandatory add-on," and the reasoning holds up. The stock ILS body has no 3.5mm audio ports, no headphone monitoring, and limited I/O access on its own. The Media Mod Cage adds a 3.5mm mic input, a 3.5mm headphone output, a remote input, micro HDMI for external monitoring, and easier access to the USB-C port, all while wrapping the camera in a small protective cage. For anyone using an external mic or planning to monitor audio at all, this isn't really optional.
Handheld and Vertical Shooting: Point-and-Shoot Grip
The Point-and-Shoot Grip converts the ILS into a more traditional handheld camera shape, with cold shoe mounts for lights and mics, a 1/4-20 thread for tripods, and both vertical and standard mounting orientations. What's Missing Right Now
One thing worth flagging: GoPro's waterproof housing, rated to 60m for the standard Mission 1 Pro, isn't confirmed compatible with the ILS. That tracks with the camera's open lens mount design, GoPro states the ILS is weatherproof rather than waterproof specifically because of the interchangeable lens system, so full submersion protection likely isn't coming for this variant the way it exists for the fixed-lens models.
Competitive Context
This is a genuinely different rigging philosophy than a compact cinema camera like the FX5 or PYXIS 6K, where third-party cage makers (Tilta, SmallRig, Kondor Blue) build the primary rigging ecosystem. GoPro keeps that ecosystem in-house, which means simpler shopping (fewer competing brands to evaluate) but also less customization if you want a build outside GoPro's own accessory catalog.
The Signal in the Noise
The Media Mod Cage is really the foundational piece here, not an optional upsell. Everything else, the grip, the mounts, the battery, builds outward from that base depending on whether you're shooting handheld, mounted, or on an extended session.
