GoPro's Mission 1 Series is bigger than it first looks. Beyond the entry-level Mission 1, the lineup includes the flagship Mission 1 Pro, three accessory bundles built around that same Pro camera, and now the Mission 1 Pro ILS, which swaps the fixed lens for a Micro Four Thirds mount. The real decision isn't really "which camera," since most of these share the same core hardware, it's whether the lens swap is worth what it costs you elsewhere.
The Base Camera: Mission 1 vs. Mission 1 Pro
Both entry points share GoPro's new 50MP 1" sensor and GP3 processor. The $599 Mission 1 is positioned for creators who don't need the Pro's higher Open Gate resolutions or category-leading frame rates, while still getting the same sensor's low-light and image quality benefits. The $699 Mission 1 Pro adds 8K60 recording and Open Gate capture at the top of the range, the meaningful jump for anyone planning to shoot at the camera's actual ceiling.
What the ILS Actually Changes
The Mission 1 Pro ILS is built on the same 50MP 1" sensor and GP3 processor as the standard Pro, at the same $699.99 price. What changes is the lens mount: instead of a fixed lens, the ILS uses a native Micro Four Thirds mount requiring manual focus and manual (or fixed) aperture lenses, since the body has no electronic contacts.
That swap comes with real tradeoffs. Lenses are sold separately, so the ILS's true cost starts well above $699.99 once you add glass. Autofocus disappears entirely, replaced by focus peaking and punch-in magnification on a 2.6-inch display that reviewers have flagged as difficult to use for precise manual focus. And the ILS is weatherproof rather than waterproof, a direct consequence of the open lens mount, which rules out the underwater use case that's part of GoPro's core identity.
In exchange, you get genuine creative control the fixed-lens models can't offer: macro work, telephoto isolation, wide cinematic framing, and shallow depth of field with the right glass, none of which is meaningfully possible on the standard Pro's fixed lens.
The Bundle Editions Aren't Different Cameras
The Grip Edition ($779.99), Creator Edition ($1,099.99), and Ultimate Creator Edition ($1,199.99) all use the same Mission 1 Pro camera underneath, they're accessory bundles, not separate hardware.
Grip Edition adds the Point-and-Shoot Grip. Creator Edition bundles the Media Mod, Volta 2 Battery Grip, Wireless Mic Complete Kit, Magnetic Latch Mount, and a carrying case, aimed at creators who want a complete production setup in one purchase.
Ultimate Creator Edition swaps the Volta 2 grip for GoPro's Fluid Pro AI gimbal and adds Light Mod 2, prioritizing stabilization and lighting over battery grip convenience.
None of that applies to the ILS, which ships as a body only. If you want the ILS with equivalent accessories, you're buying the Media Mod, a grip, and lenses separately rather than getting a bundled price break.
Competitive Context
This is a genuinely different decision than choosing between trims of a typical camera lineup. The Mission 1 vs. Pro choice is a straightforward budget-versus-capability call. The ILS decision is closer to choosing between an action camera and a compact cinema tool that happens to share GoPro's ecosystem, autofocus and waterproofing against creative lens control.
The Signal in the Noise
For most GoPro shooters, especially anyone who wants underwater use or reliable autofocus without a monitor, the standard Mission 1 Pro or one of its bundles remains the simpler, more capable choice. The ILS earns its place specifically for shooters who already value lens control enough to accept manual focus and give up waterproofing, not as an automatic upgrade over the Pro.
