Location scouting is traditionally a time and resource-intensive process. You research neighborhoods, drive to locations, photograph possibilities, assess logistics, investigate permits, and evaluate light conditions — often spending days before a single camera rolls. AI doesn't replace the physical site visit, but it compresses the research phase that precedes it significantly.

Generating Location Concepts

The first use of AI in location research is generative: describing what you need and asking the model to brainstorm specific types of locations that might work.

Describe the scene's requirements — period, atmosphere, architectural style, geography, time of day, emotional register — and ask the AI to suggest specific types of locations that fit. For a gritty urban drama set in the 1970s, it might suggest specific architectural periods, neighborhood types, and urban features that would read correctly on screen.

This doesn't produce a specific address. It produces a framework for where to look — which neighborhoods, which building types, which geographic features — that makes the physical scouting process more targeted.

Permit and Regulation Research

Every filming location has permit requirements. Public spaces, private property, national parks, government buildings, historic districts — each has different rules, different application processes, and different fees.

AI can research permit requirements for any location you're considering. Ask it what permits are needed to film in a specific city's public spaces, what the typical processing time is, what restrictions apply to commercial productions versus student films, and who the relevant contacts are.

This information should always be verified directly with the relevant authorities — permit rules change and AI training data has cutoffs. But the AI gives you a starting framework that makes the verification process faster.

Sun Position and Lighting Research

The quality and direction of natural light at a location depends on the time of day, the time of year, and the location's orientation. Filming a scene that requires dramatic side light at 3pm in December at a north-facing location will produce very different results than the same scene in June.

AI tools combined with sun position data can help you research the light conditions at a specific location on specific dates. Describe the location's orientation, your intended shooting dates, and the lighting conditions you need — and the AI can help you determine whether the location will deliver them.

Building a Virtual Scout Package

Before visiting a location, AI can compile a research package from publicly available information: historical context, architectural details, neighborhood characteristics, proximity to other locations, transportation access, and known restrictions.

This virtual scout doesn't replace the physical visit — you cannot evaluate acoustics, assess practical challenges, or confirm the actual appearance of a space from a research package alone. But arriving at a scout with a thorough research package means the visit is focused on confirmation and creative evaluation rather than basic fact-finding.
