What the a01+ actually is

The a01+ uses dual-layer Micro-OLED displays running at up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness with HDR10 support — and a real-time SDR-to-HDR conversion engine that upconverts standard dynamic range content on the fly. A custom display chip and XREAL's ARView Image Engine drive a 120Hz refresh rate, and a proprietary spatial stabilization algorithm tracks micro-movements to keep the picture steady even when you're moving. Field of view is 50 degrees.

Resolution is 1080p — 1920×1080 per eye. That's the honest limitation worth naming upfront: 1080p is not a professional monitoring standard for color critical work or grading, and the a01+ isn't trying to be. What it is is a large, bright, stable virtual screen that fits in a bag and costs $299.

There's no built-in camera — a deliberate choice to keep the weight down and the focus on viewing rather than mixed reality computing. For everyday editorial and creative work, that's the right tradeoff. For AR applications that require spatial awareness of the physical environment, it's a non-starter — but that's not what this product is for.

The filmmaker use case

XREAL's own framing is "pocket cinema" for commuters and travelers. The more practical application for the filmmaking and content creation community is portable screen real estate.

On a location scout, a shoot day, or a long transit between locations, having access to a 147-inch equivalent virtual screen means reviewing footage, making selects, doing a rough cut review, or working in an editing app without needing a laptop open on a table. The a01+ connects directly to phones and laptops — no additional hardware required — and the spatial stabilization means the virtual screen stays put even if you're in a moving vehicle.

For solo operators and small crews working without a traditional field monitor setup, it's also a viable playback tool for camera review between takes. Not a replacement for a calibrated onset monitor for color-critical work — but for checking framing, focus, and coverage review, a 147-inch equivalent virtual screen at $299 is a meaningfully different proposition than a $600+ SmallHD or Atomos.
