Fujifilm's VF-GFXC2 May Be the Sharpest Viewfinder Yet, and It's Only for the Eterna 55

Fujifilm's VF-GFXC2 viewfinder for the GFX Eterna 55 pairs a 2048 x 1536 4:3 OLED with open gate framing. Here's what's confirmed so far.

Fujifilm's VF-GFXC2 May Be the Sharpest Viewfinder Yet, and It's Only for the Eterna 55

Fujifilm is nearly ready to ship the VF-GFXC2, a dedicated electronic viewfinder for its GFX Eterna 55 large-format cinema camera. Its 2048 x 1536 OLED panel may be the highest-resolution EVF in the industry, according to Fujifilm. It's also built around a 4:3 shape that matches the camera's open gate sensor.

The catch: it only works with the Eterna 55, and there's no official plan to change that.

A Viewfinder Built for Open Gate

Most viewfinders use a 16:9 or 3:2 panel. The VF-GFXC2 uses a native 4:3 OLED, because the Eterna 55 has a 4:3 sensor and Fujifilm recommends shooting it open gate.

The viewfinder offers two display modes:

  • Clean mode: the image fills the full panel, with no information overlaid on it
  • Info mode: the image is cropped in very slightly, with shooting information arranged around the edges

In both modes, nothing sits on top of the image itself. That matters for operators framing open gate or anamorphic shots, where every part of the frame counts.

The Resolution Claim

The panel is a 0.64-inch OLED at 2048 x 1536, with 1,000 nits of brightness and 1.0x magnification.

Fujifilm's Marc Cattrall told CineD at IBC 2026 that he believes it may be the highest-resolution EVF in the industry, a claim Fujifilm also makes in its own press materials. CineD's first reaction after looking through the near-final unit was that the image looks shockingly good.

There's also a practical advantage over universal viewfinders. When you punch in to check focus, the camera generates the magnified view itself and sends it through its own connector. Many third-party EVFs are limited to enlarging whatever HD signal they receive over HDMI or SDI.

Controls and Build

The VF-GFXC2 is housed in a machined aluminum cylinder and weighs 370g. It includes:

  • Assignable function buttons, which can control anything a camera function button can, such as waveform or focus check
  • A machined diopter ring designed for quick adjustment, useful when several people share one finder
  • A proximity sensor that appears to switch the display off when you step away
  • A softer eyecup than earlier prototypes

One Cable, and One Big Limitation

The viewfinder connects using a single cable that carries power, control, and picture, so there's nothing extra to power.

But it plugs into the same proprietary port as the Eterna 55's included 5-inch monitor. That means you can use the viewfinder or Fujifilm's monitor, not both at the same time. If you want a second display alongside the EVF, it has to come from the camera's SDI or HDMI outputs.

Only for the Eterna 55, for Now

The biggest question is whether the VF-GFXC2 will ever work with other cameras. There's no official plan for that.

Cattrall said he has raised the idea with Fujifilm's R&D team himself, suggesting a USB version, and that his team will keep pushing for it. A high-quality EVF that works across camera brands would fill a long-standing gap, but for now, this one is Eterna 55 only.

Also New: The ETERNA ProRemote App

Fujifilm also announced the ETERNA ProRemote app for iOS, which adds remote control of the Eterna 55 from an iPhone or iPad. It includes live view, full menu access, clip downloads, and the ability to control up to four cameras at once, useful for multi-camera setups.

Price and Availability

Fujifilm hasn't announced a price for the VF-GFXC2. Cattrall said he expects it to be quite low, but stressed that isn't confirmed. The viewfinder is due later this year, with no specific date.

Bundles are still being decided, too. Fujifilm is weighing options that include the camera with the EVF, the monitor, or both, while the current package stays on sale.

Competitive Context

Dedicated, high-end viewfinders are common on large cinema cameras from companies like ARRI and Sony, where the EVF is designed to work with a specific camera system. Universal EVFs exist, but they're typically limited by the HDMI or SDI signal they receive.

The VF-GFXC2 follows the dedicated approach, and its 4:3 shape reflects how specifically it's tailored to the Eterna 55's open gate workflow.

The Signal in the Noise

For Eterna 55 owners, the VF-GFXC2 looks like a genuinely strong addition, especially for handheld and shoulder-rig work where a monitor isn't practical. A native 4:3 panel is the kind of detail that makes open gate framing noticeably easier.

The one-display-at-a-time limitation is worth planning around, and final pricing will decide how many owners pick it up.

Would a dedicated 4:3 viewfinder change how you'd rig the Eterna 55, or do you prefer working off a monitor?
