The FX5 Isn't the Only Thing Delayed: Viewfinder, XLR Handle, and Timecode Cable Slip Too
Sony's FX5 delay also covers the DVF-EL1 viewfinder, XLR-H2 handle, and VMC-BNCU1 timecode cable. Here is what each does and what the delay means for buyers.
Sony's FX5 delay reaches beyond the camera body. Sony Japan's notice also postpones three accessories. They are the DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder, the XLR-H2 XLR handle, and the VMC-BNCU1 timecode adapter cable.
Sony attributes the delay to production-related circumstances and has not explained further. It lists the FX5 itself as late October or later.
What Sony Postponed

Sony announced the FX5 on July 22 with a mid-August ship date. Sony Japan's postponement notice appeared August 18 and was revised September 18. It names the FX5, the DVF-EL1, the XLR-H2, and the VMC-BNCU1.
On July 28, Sony Japan had said FX5 orders exceeded its expectations. It has since attributed the delay to production-related circumstances and said no more. Retailers have relayed a quality adjustment, and Sony Alpha Rumors points to a memory shortage. Sony has confirmed neither.
Sony has not given separate dates for the accessories. Sony Japan says timing will be announced once it is confirmed.
What Each Accessory Does

The DVF-EL1 is a detachable OLED viewfinder with 7.08 million dots and 0.9x magnification. It tilts up 90 degrees and mounts through a proprietary port on top of the camera. Sony lists the panel as 10-bit with a wide color gamut equivalent to DCI-P3.
The XLR-H2 adds two XLR/TRS combo inputs and a 3.5 mm input for up to four channels. It records up to 96 kHz at 32-bit float and can save separate WAV files in the camera. It attaches through the Multi Interface Shoe and includes a grip with four 1/4"-20 threads.
The VMC-BNCU1 brings a BNC timecode signal into the FX5's USB-C port. Sony lists timecode input through USB Port 2 only. The cable is about 7.9 inches long and needs no external power.
How the Pieces Fit Together

The viewfinder and the handle cannot be used at the same time. B&H says the viewfinder connector sits too close to the Multi Interface Shoe. Sony's own footnote says the viewfinder cannot be used with accessories that need that shoe.
That forces a choice on top of the camera. You get either the XLR handle or the viewfinder. B&H says the handle brings 32-bit float recording to an FX-series camera for the first time.
Competitive Context

FX3, FX3A, FX30, and FX2 owners cannot carry their accessories over. Sony says the XLR-H2 is not compatible with those cameras, and the XLR-H1 is not supported on the FX5. Lensrentals lists the FX3's timecode cable as a different model, the VMC-BNCM1.
Third-party makers are already building around the camera. BRC covered Tilta's EVF extension kit for the FX5 in a separate piece.
The Signal in the Noise

The delay hits the parts that make the FX5 a working cinema camera. XLR audio, a viewfinder, and timecode are accessories a crew needs on day one. A body without them is a smaller package than the one Sony announced.
Kit buyers should note the pricing. B&H lists the body at $4,898, the kit with the XLR-H2 at $5,498, and the handle alone at $798. The kit saves $198 over body plus handle, but Sony has not said whether kits ship on the body's timeline.
Sony's explanation is brief, and accessory dates have not been announced. If your FX5 plan depends on XLR audio or timecode, get your dealer's confirmation on accessory stock before you commit.
Would you wait for a full FX5 rig, or take the body first and rig around the missing accessories?
