If you're not familiar with the term, Open Gate means the sensor captures the maximum available area regardless of your target aspect ratio, rather than cropping to 16:9 or another fixed frame in-camera.
That gives editors more room to reframe, punch in, or repurpose a single take into multiple aspect ratios in post — vertical for social, widescreen for the main edit — without losing resolution. Panasonic has offered this on cameras like the Lumix S9, and Sony has reportedly resisted adding it to its Cinema Line cameras for years, with company managers previously saying they didn't think users actually needed it.
