What is a Neutral Density Filter and When Should You Use One?

A neutral density filter is one of the most practical accessories a filmmaker can own — and one of the least glamorous. It doesn't add a look. It doesn't sharpen the image or add color. What it does is reduce the amount of light entering the lens without affecting color or image quality, giving you control over exposure in situations where the camera's settings alone aren't enough.

If you've ever tried to shoot at a wide aperture in bright sunlight and ended up with overexposed footage, an ND filter is the solution.

Why ND Filters Exist

The exposure triangle — aperture, shutter speed, ISO — gives you three variables to control exposure. But each comes with tradeoffs.

Closing the aperture reduces light but also increases depth of field, which may not be what you want. Increasing shutter speed reduces light but violates the 180-degree shutter rule, producing footage with unnatural motion. Reducing ISO helps but modern cameras often have limited ISO range at the low end.

An ND filter adds a fourth variable: how much light reaches the sensor before it even gets to the aperture. You can reduce exposure significantly without touching the aperture, shutter speed, or ISO — preserving your depth of field, motion blur, and image quality.

Fixed vs. Variable ND Filters

Fixed ND filters reduce light by a specific amount, measured in stops. A 3-stop ND reduces light to one-eighth of its original value. A 6-stop ND reduces it to one sixty-fourth. Common strengths are ND4, ND8, ND16, ND64, and ND1000 — the number indicating how much the light is reduced.

Variable ND filters combine two polarizing elements that can be rotated relative to each other to continuously vary the reduction from roughly 1 to 8 stops in a single filter.

The advantage is flexibility — one filter covers a range of lighting conditions. The disadvantage is that variable NDs can introduce cross-polarization artifacts at extreme settings, producing an X-shaped darkening in the corners of the frame.

For most situations, a small set of fixed NDs — a 3-stop and a 6-stop — covers the majority of use cases without the quality tradeoff of a variable.

When to Use One

The most common use case is exterior shooting in bright conditions. Maintaining a wide aperture for shallow depth of field in direct sunlight often requires several stops of ND to keep exposure correct at the proper shutter speed.

ND filters are also useful in bright interior environments — shooting near windows with direct sunlight — and any situation where you want to maintain a specific aperture and shutter speed combination but the available light is too bright.

Built-In ND vs. External Filters

Some cinema cameras and prosumer camcorders include built-in ND filters that can be engaged at the press of a button. This is a significant workflow advantage — no filter swapping, no vignetting, no threading filters onto lenses in the field.

For cameras without built-in ND, screw-on filters sized to your lens diameter are the standard solution. Keep in mind that you'll need either a separate filter for each lens diameter or step-up rings to use one larger filter across multiple lenses.
