ZEISS Confirms the Otus DSLR Lenses Are Done

ZEISS has confirmed the Otus DSLR lenses are discontinued, ending a line that started in 2013. The Otus ML mirrorless series carries the name forward, but not yet all four focal lengths.

ZEISS has confirmed what retailers were already showing: the Otus lenses for DSLR mounts are discontinued.

"In response to the latest market developments, we have decided to adapt our product portfolio and therefore, will no longer offer the lens in question," the company told PetaPixel, adding that "our comprehensive service remains available for the products that are out of stock."

What's Actually Gone

The Otus 28mm f/1.4, 55mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 100mm f/1.4 are all marked discontinued at major retailers, including Camera Kitamura, Map Camera, Bic, and Yodobashi in Japan. In the US, Adorama no longer lists the lenses at all, and B&H has marked the EF and F-mount Otus lenses as discontinued.

All four were full-frame, manual-focus-only primes at a shared f/1.4 maximum aperture, available in Canon EF (ZE) and Nikon F (ZF.2) mounts. The 55mm launched first in 2013 at an MSRP of $3,499, followed by the 85mm in 2014, the 28mm in 2015, and the 100mm in 2019.

Why Now

The timing isn't surprising. No manufacturer has produced a new DSLR body in years, and the installed base of EF and F-mount shooters has been shrinking steadily as the industry has consolidated around mirrorless mounts. ZEISS kept the DSLR Otus line in production longer than that trend would have predicted, and the company's statement to PetaPixel frames the decision as a response to "the latest market developments" rather than a sudden pivot.

What Replaces Them

The Otus name isn't disappearing. The Otus ML line carries the series forward for mirrorless mounts, beginning with the Otus ML 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4, followed by a third lens, the Otus ML 35mm f/1.4, released earlier this year. All three are available for Canon RF, Sony E, and Nikon Z mounts.

The ML lenses keep the manual-focus design philosophy of the originals. They're built with a long, cine-style focus throw, and the aperture rings can be de-clicked for smooth iris pulls during video work, a feature the DSLR-era lenses didn't offer.

One thing worth flagging for anyone tracking the lineup closely: the ML series currently covers 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm, not all four original focal lengths. There's no direct ML replacement yet for the 28mm or the 100mm.

Competitive Context

ZEISS isn't alone in retiring legacy DSLR glass as the market shifts. The broader photography and cinema lens industry has been winding down EF and F-mount development for several years, with most new lens engineering investment going toward RF, E, and Z mounts where current camera sales are concentrated.

What sets the Otus situation apart is the lens line's reputation. The Otus series was built without compromise from the start, optimized purely for image quality rather than autofocus speed or compactness, and that positioning earned it a dedicated following among photographers and cinematographers who valued absolute optical performance over convenience. The ML successors inherit that reputation, but buyers locked into EF or F-mount bodies don't get a direct upgrade path within the ZEISS lineup.

The Signal in the Noise

For anyone shooting EF or F-mount and still wanting an Otus, the used market is now the only path, though stock is thin. KEH, one of the larger used gear retailers, currently lists just one Otus DSLR lens in EF mount. Given how well-built these lenses are, used examples are a reasonable bet if you can find one in good condition, but don't expect a deep selection.

For anyone already planning a move to mirrorless, the ML line is the more future-proof option regardless of what happens to remaining DSLR stock. The de-clickable aperture ring alone makes the ML lenses meaningfully better suited to video work than the originals were.
