Sigma FP2 Announced: 24.5MP Stacked Sensor, 6K Open Gate, ProRes RAW, and 70GB Built In

Sigma has announced the FP2, a full redesign of its tiny full-frame fp camera. It adds a 24.5MP partially stacked sensor, 6K open gate recording, ProRes RAW, and 70GB of built-in storage, all in what Sigma calls the world’s smallest full-frame body.

The Sigma FP2 is $2,199 body only and arrives November 11 at authorized Sigma retailers.

The Sensor and Image

The FP2 uses a new 24.5MP full-frame, partially stacked CMOS sensor. Sigma says its faster readout reduces rolling shutter distortion compared with the original fp.

The camera records in L-Log, licensed from Leica, with up to 14.1 stops of dynamic range in 4K full-frame L-Log. At ISO 1250 and above, Sigma rates highlight headroom at 7 stops.

For exposure targets when shooting log, see How to Expose S-Log3, C-Log2, and N-Log Without Guesswork.

Video Features

In CINE mode, the FP2 records 6K open gate and supports ProRes RAW. Open gate captures the full sensor area, which leaves room to reframe for both vertical and horizontal deliverables.

A Director’s Viewfinder mode simulates the framing of the ARRI ALEXA 35 and Sony Venice 2 and Burano, which is useful for scouting and previs. There’s also a desqueeze mode for anamorphic lenses.

With the optional HU-21 hot shoe unit and Panasonic’s DMW-XLR2 or DMW-DMS1 audio accessories, the FP2 can record 32-bit float audio.

Storage and Battery

The FP2 has 70GB of internal storage plus an SD card slot. If the card fills during a take, recording continues on the internal storage.

Sigma rates battery life at about 130 minutes of video per charge.

Size, Autofocus, and Viewfinder

The body measures about 4.4 x 2.8 x 1.6 inches and weighs 388g on its own, or 446g with the battery. It uses the L-Mount, shared with Panasonic and Leica.

Sigma says autofocus is faster and more accurate than the original fp’s, with better low-light performance and subject detection that now includes birds. Sigma’s announcement doesn’t list in-body image stabilization.

There’s no built-in viewfinder. The new EVF-21 clips on over USB-C, uses a 0.5-inch, 5.76-million-dot OLED panel, and tilts up to 90 degrees.

Pricing and Kits

The FP2 is $2,199 body only. Two kits are $2,749 each: one with the 50mm f/2 DG Contemporary lens, and one with the EVF-21 viewfinder.

Sigma also announced a new 50mm f/1.4 CL DG Contemporary lens alongside the camera.

The FP2 is available November 11 at authorized Sigma retailers.

Competitive Context

The FP2’s closest competition is Sony’s FX3, the go-to compact full-frame cinema camera. For more on how the FX3 compares with Sony’s newer FX5, see Sony FX5 vs. FX3.

Nikon’s Z5 IIC is another option for full-frame raw video in a small body, covered in Nikon Z5 IIC: Full-Frame Raw Video. Within the L-Mount system, Panasonic’s Lumix cameras offer more traditional bodies with built-in viewfinders and in-body stabilization.

The FP2 stands apart on size, 6K open gate, and its internal storage.

The Signal in the Noise

The original fp built a following as a modular, minimalist camera that could become a cinema rig. The FP2 keeps that idea and fixes several of the original’s weak spots with a faster sensor, better autofocus, internal storage, and an optional viewfinder.

At $2,199, it’s priced well below most compact cinema cameras with 6K open gate and ProRes RAW. The lack of a built-in viewfinder and the likely absence of IBIS mean it works best rigged up or on a gimbal, so plan for accessories when budgeting.
