Sony Pushes the FX5's Release Back to Late October, at the Earliest
Sony's FX5 is delayed to "late October or later" in Japan, still with no real explanation, and now sitting behind other markets' timelines.
Sony's FX5, the full-frame Cinema Line camera announced back in July, has been indefinitely delayed since mid-August, and Sony has now put an actual timeframe on it for the first time. A revised notice on Sony's Japanese site, dated September 18, moves the release window from "undetermined" to "late October or later."
How the Camera Got Here
Sony announced the FX5 on July 22, with a Japanese release originally set for August 21. Within hours of opening pre-orders, Sony warned of possible delivery delays as demand outpaced expectations. Then, just three days before the camera was due in stores, Sony postponed the launch entirely, citing "production reasons" without further explanation.
That postponement notice sat with an "undetermined" release date for about a month. The September 18 revision is the first time Sony has attached any actual window to it, even a rough one.
What's Actually Delayed
The delay isn't limited to the camera body. Sony's notice covers four products together: the FX5 itself, the DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder, the XLR-H2 handle unit, and the VMC-BNCU1 timecode adapter cable. Anyone who ordered the body-only version planning to add the handle or viewfinder separately is on the same delayed schedule as everyone else.
Sony's launch cashback campaign, worth up to ¥30,000 (roughly $185) per eligible lens purchased alongside the camera, is affected too. Its original purchase window was set to close September 28, weeks before any customer would actually receive a camera under the new timeline. Sony says new campaign dates are coming, without specifying when.
A Real Gap Between Japan and Everywhere Else
Sony's revised notice applies specifically to the Japanese market, and Sony hasn't published an equivalent statement for the US or Europe. As of IBC 2026, retailer listings were pointing to October 15 in the US and October 16 in Europe, dates that now sit ahead of Japan's "late October or later" window.
Sony's own Reiko Beitz said at IBC that early orders, roughly 7,000 at the time, were tracking for mid-October, with new orders likely fulfilled toward the end of the year or into early 2027. Whether Japan is genuinely on a separate allocation schedule, or whether this delay is quietly affecting every market, isn't something Sony has clarified.
