Instagram’s Free Edits App Arrives on Mac With a Multi-Track Timeline and an Agent Hook
Instagram’s free Edits editor is now on Mac with a multi-track timeline, LUT import and 4K export, plus an MCP that lets AI agents work inside it.
Instagram’s free Edits video editor is now on Mac, with an MCP that lets AI agents work inside the app.
Matthew Simari, head of product management for Edits, told The Verge creators can “use any agent you want,” including Meta’s Muse.
The desktop app adds a multi-track timeline, keyframes, color tools and 4K export without a watermark.
What the MCP Does

MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is the standard that lets an AI agent call an app’s tools. Simari said Instagram is releasing one for all the tools in Edits Desktop. For background, see What Is MCP? How Claude and ChatGPT Control Your Apps.
He described going back and forth between agentic and manual editing. In his example, a creator asks Muse to use the Edits MCP to make a rough cut from a video in their downloads folder.
The agent makes the tool calls and builds the rough cut. The creator then opens the project file in Edits to keep editing.
Muse is Meta’s own agent. Its Mac app launched in September and can sort files, fill out forms and summarize messages and notes, according to OnlineMarketing.de. Users choose which apps it can use, and it asks for consent before sensitive actions. Meta has rolled Muse out only in the US.
What the Desktop App Adds

Instagram’s page lists a multi-track timeline with keyframes, audio waveforms for beat-accurate cuts, and color wheels and curves. You can import your own LUTs and font files and generate unlimited automatic captions.
Meta says keyboard shortcuts can be carried over from another editor, per The Verge. The app has access to Instagram’s audio library, and audio and text styles saved on mobile show up on desktop.
Edits can publish directly to Instagram and works across multiple aspect ratios. Exports are 4K with no watermark.
Where the Limits Are

The app runs only on macOS, on a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later). You need an Instagram account to sign in.
You can’t yet edit the same project on mobile and desktop, according to The Verge. Meta says cross-platform editing is in the works and plans to update the app weekly.
In June, Meta told TechCrunch that creators would be able to sync their work between mobile and desktop.
Competitive Context

Edits launched last year as a rival to ByteDance’s CapCut, which already has a desktop version, per TechCrunch.
It is also entering a field of editors that agents can drive. DaVinci Resolve 21.1: Claude & ChatGPT MCP Integration covers Resolve’s MCP. Can Claude Edit in Premiere Pro? How to Connect It, and What It Can Actually Do covers Premiere.
DaVinci Resolve has a free edition, and Resolve Studio is $236 through November 20, down from $295, per Newsshooter.

The Signal in the Noise
The notable change is the MCP, not the timeline. A free editor that exposes its tools to any agent lowers the cost of trying agent-assisted editing.
The detail rests on one interview. Instagram’s own download page does not yet describe the MCP.
Meta’s incentive is plain. TechCrunch framed the AI and desktop push as a way to keep creators engaged on Instagram.
A rough cut from an agent is a starting point. The Verge’s example hands the project back to the creator to finish. Rough-cut assembly is also the kind of task agents are now being pointed at in editors from Resolve to Premiere.
