When Will the Sony FX5 Ship? Sony Finally Sets a Date

Sony has set a release date for the FX5. In a notice posted October 28, Sony Japan said the full-frame Cinema Line camera will go on sale in Japan on Friday, November 20, about three months after its original August 21 date.

Three delayed accessories ship the same day: the DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder, the XLR-H2 XLR handle unit and the VMC-BNCU1 timecode adapter cable. In the U.S., retailers including B&H and Adorama now list the FX5 for mid-November.

How We Got Here

Sony announced the FX5 on July 22, with pre-orders opening right away. Sony Japan warned of possible delivery delays within a day because of high demand, then postponed the August 21 launch three days before release, citing production reasons.

On September 18, Sony moved the release window from “undetermined” to “late October or later,” covered in Sony Pushes the FX5’s Release Back to Late October, at the Earliest. The new notice replaces that window with a firm date and repeats Sony’s apology for the delay.

Sony still hasn’t said what the production issue was.

What It Means by Region

Japan: The FX5 and its accessories go on sale November 20. Sony also extended its FX5 launch campaign, which originally closed September 28, through January 12, 2027.

United States: Sony USA hasn’t published its own date, but B&H and Adorama list the FX5 for mid-November, per reporting from YMCinema and Digital Camera World. Pricing is unchanged at $4,898 for the body and $5,498 with the XLR handle.

UK and Europe: Sony UK had listed November 16, but new orders now show January 2027, according to Digital Camera World. Some European orders may not ship until January.

If you have an order in, your dealer is still the best source for when your specific unit will arrive, since early pre-orders are likely to ship first.

Getting Ready for It

Competitive Context

The FX5 sits between the FX3 and FX6 in Sony’s Cinema Line. It uses an 18.2-megapixel full-frame stacked sensor, and its spec sheet includes internal RAW and open gate recording.

The delay gave competitors three extra months. Canon’s C80 and C50, Panasonic’s S1 II and Blackmagic’s PYXIS 6K have all been shipping in the meantime, covered in Sony FX5 vs. the Competition: Canon, Blackmagic and RED.

The Signal in the Noise

A firm date matters after three months of vague windows. For buyers in Japan and the U.S., the FX5 should be in hand before the end of the year, along with the viewfinder and handle that were held up with it.

The open questions are the reason for the delay and how quickly Sony can work through the backlog. Sony has never explained the production issue, and the January dates for new UK orders suggest supply will stay tight into 2027.
